Father/Son # 1

Scene: Grown man describing his relationship with his dad through the years. The man could be sitting; he could be walking. It will be important to capture the emotion on his face at key times.
Punctuating the video are still images depicting the activities described.

When I was a little boy, my dad would take me fishing with him in his little green rowboat. I loved reeling in those bluegills and perch. Mostly, though, I loved just being with my dad—because he loved having me with him.

In seventh grade, Dad helped me build an electric motor for the school science fair. He bought the material, guided me step by step, and gave me lots of encouragement. “Great job, Son!” he said when I was finished. And the way he smiled at me, I could tell he was just as excited as I was.

Dad showed me how to fix the engine on my first car. “You can do this,” he said, grinning at me. And with him there, right alongside me, I could—and I did.

My dad has always been there for me. Still today, he’s never too busy to listen to me, he never watches the clock, and he never puts me down. I remember once looking up, and there he was, just standing there and smiling at me. “I’m so proud of you, Son,” he said. “Why?” I asked. I hadn’t done anything special. “Just because you’re you,” he said. “You’re my son, and that’s all the reason I need to think the world of you.”

[VO]
Maybe your own dad wasn’t anything like that. Maybe he wasn’t even there. But what if God is? What if he wants to be that kind of father to you? No matter what your story is, you can know him that way, as a dad who thinks the world of you—just because you’re you.

[Bible verse]
See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! (1 John 3:1 NLT)

Father/Son #2

Scene: Outdoor setting. Grown man describing his relationship with his dad through the years. The man could be sitting; he could be walking. It will be important to capture the emotion on his face at key times.

I guess I was, oh, six years old when Dad took me camping in the Upper Peninsula. Just him and me. We pitched that big wall-tent of his together. Dad showed me how. I still remember the smell of the canvas—the smell of the outdoors.
I liked pounding in the tent stakes and tightening the guy ropes. “That’s the stuff, Son!” he said. I felt so proud! We did it together, my dad and me. We were a team.
[Show photos of father and son putting up tent, of the campsite, of them together in the woods.]

That old Coleman lantern of Dad’s fascinated me—that soft, intense whoosh, like a miniature jet-engine. I watched Dad use it and the camp stove, but he wouldn’t let me try them myself. “Not now, Son” he said. “You’re not ready yet.”

But when it came to building the campfire, Dad put me in charge. “Here’s what you do,” he told me, and then he turned me loose. He was confident in me—and that gave me confidence in myself.
Dad and I, we’d sit there by those campfires I built, just staring into the flames at night, listening to the whip-poor-wills and the owls and the leaves whispering in the treetops . . . just me and my dad. It doesn’t get any better than that.

So when God says he’s my Father, I know what he means. He loves me just because I’m me and I’m his. And he’s always with me, guiding me, watching out for me, empowering me, encouraging me . . . and just plain enjoying me. A lot of guys can’t relate to that. All I can say is, my Father’s heart is big enough to give them the love and the value and the belonging they never knew. It’s the way he is. God is a true Father. And God is love.

[Bible verse]
